They're produced instantaneously, like a glissando on the strings, a plucked note, or drumming on the soundboard. Most of my new sounds are technically not with a prepared piano. "Cage's changes are fixed - you can't alter the instrument during a performance. "But I am more interested in the piano's total expansion possibilities," he says. Crumb admits being influenced by Cage's scores for prepared piano - that is, a piano that has been prepared by having objects such as nuts, bolts, or pieces of rubber lodged between and entwined around the strings.
